At the Global Digital Cultures conference, held in Amsterdam on 1 June 2022, Alessandro Gandini, Marta Tonetta, Gaia Casagrande for the CRAFTWORK research team present a paper entitled: ‘Neo-craft’ workers as cultural producers”, co-authored also with Giulia Giorgi and Gianmarco Peterlongo, also members of the CRAFTWORK project. Based on data collected in the context of the project, the paper proposes to consider neo-craft work as an epitomous example of this ‘platform-ised’ work. The presentation reflects on the relationship between platforms and the globalization of craft work and cultures, as platforms contribute to produce (and reproduce) representations and imaginaries of class relations and ‘good work’, at the same time fostering new forms of inequality and barriers to access the craft profession, and restructuring power dynamics between producers, workers, and consumers on the local territory.
